Avatar 2: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2010 sci-fi hit, Avatar. The sequel introduces a host of new characters and brings back familiar faces from the original film.
The story continues with Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, who first appeared in Avatar in human form before permanently becoming one of the Na’vi. In the sequel, Jake is now a father of four, and his primary concern is protecting his family. He realizes he is also responsible for the forest nation that took him in, leading him to make difficult decisions for their overall well-being and protection.
Zoe Saldaña reprises her role as Neytiri, the future Tsahìk of her clan and Jake’s wife. Neytiri feels torn between her people and her love, but since she has started a new family, she ultimately devotes her energy to them and Jake.
Sigourney Weaver returns to play the new role of Kiri. Kiri’s conception inside the Avatar body of the late scientist and researcher Grace remains a mystery, but the young daughter of the lover of the Na’vi people carries on a lot of Grace’s characteristics, like her fascination with the creatures of Pandora and how the whole system of the planet connects.
Stephen Lang reprises his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch, and Matt Gerald returns as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet. Kate Winslet joins the cast as Ronal, a new character, along with Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, and Brendan Cowell as Scoresby.
The sequel also introduces new characters played by Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Brendan Cowell, and Michelle Yeoh. Vin Diesel also joins the cast in an undisclosed role.
The official synopsis reads: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”
