South Park is an animated sitcom for adults created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, while Brian Graden developed it for the television network, Comedy Central. The series follows the four main characters Eric Cartman, Kenny McCormick, Kyle Broflovski and Stan Marsh who are cheeky grade-schoolers. The plot revolves around their bizarre misadventures in and around South Park, Colorado. Just like The Simpsons, this show utilises an extremely massive assemblage of repeating characters. It became infamous for its dark, surreal wit and profanity that mocks a broad scope of topics for mature viewers.
The creators improved the series from The Spirit of Christmas, which were two continuous animated shorts produced in 1992 and 1995. The most recent became one of the first ever videos to go viral online that finally led to the production of South Park. In August 1997, it debuted with outstanding success, steadily collecting the highest ratings of every basic cable program. Succeeding ratings were varied, but it still continues to be one of the highest rated series of Comedy Central — and has a contract that will last through 2019.
