Convict Lake was originally named Wit-sa-nap until an incident on September 23, 1871 where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City and were found near the lake. It is located within the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada in California and is a popular for fishing and hiking activities. There is a high demand of fishing in the lake every summer that it needs to be stocked once a week with trout supplied by nearby hatcheries.
